What If? Canadian Submission Guidelines ((International see below…)
Please read our guidelines carefully in order to maximize your chances of publication. Please note; we require the following information with your submission.

Who should submit?
We are currently accepting material from creative Canadians 19 years of age and under.
What should I submit?
Fiction
We accept up to 3000 word short fiction in all genres. However, the tighter your writing
the better your chance of being published, so well-written stories of 2000 or fewer words
are preferred. Please send no more than one story per submission.
Poetry
Poetry submissions are accepted in any poetic style. Poetry must be of suitable length to
fit on one page of the magazine. We cannot publish poems that will not fit on a single
page including artwork. Please send no more than four poems per submission.
Non-Fiction
We look for editorial/opinion pieces/personal essays of 1500 words or fewer for our Perspectives section. These should be similar to editorial pieces or letters to the editor as in any newspaper We also accept personal experience pieces up to 1200 words for possible use in the new ‘What’s your story?’ section of the magazine and website.
Audio and video files
These could be spoken word pieces, animated shorts, music you have created, humourous videos, rants (clean language of course), or any sort of file you feel would compliment the What If? site.
Visual Arts
Samples of your artwork or photography are welcome. Please limit your initial submission to a maximum of six pieces. We only respond to submissions that we plan on using in the magazine or on the website. In order to have proper reproduction in the magazine all artwork and photographs should be a minimum of 300dpi. If you are sending artwork or photography for front cover consideration it must be a minimum of 9” x 12”, 600dpi and photographed in portrait style. Please contact us if the material you would like to submit is too large for email.
Reviews
If you would like to do a book, music, movie or game review for What If? please contact us first. We have a listing of books for review and will send you a copy. In the case of game, music, and movie reviews please contact to be assigned a review.
Rights and Payment
What If? supplies two contributors copies. We accept only material where the author/illustrator owns full rights.
Is there a reading/submission fee?
There is currently no reading fee for submissions or contest entries at What If?

- Please Note: If you are submitting material by mail you must include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) so that we can respond to your submission. If you would like the material you submit returned to you please ensure you attach sufficient postage. Any submissions not including a SASE with sufficient postage or an email address will not be responded to.

Submission Response Time
Because we are a quarterly magazine, depending when your submission arrives in
comparison to our deadlines it may take up to four months for us to respond. If you
have not heard back from us by that time please contact us but the chances are that
we have been unable to reach you because of improper or omitted contact
information.
What If? International Submission Guidelines
What If? is now accepting material from young adults from around the world. Please read carefully to make sure you and the material you are submitting are eligible as not all categories are open to international readers.
What can I submit?
- Poetry: Poems in any style up to 20 lines may be submitted for possible use in the new ‘What If? around the world’ section of the magazine or the international section of the website.
- Short Fiction: Stories up to 1000 words may be submitted for possible use in the new ‘What If? around the world’ section of the magazine or the international section of the website.
- Non-Fiction: Personal experience pieces up to 1200 words may be submitted for possible use in the new ‘What’s your story?’ section of the magazine and website. This section was specifically created to tell the stories of the lives of your young readers and help each other connect, so make sure your piece is a true story of an experience you have had. We are not looking for opinion pieces for this section.

Am I eligible to submit?
- If you are 19 years of age or under and live somewhere on the Planet Earth you are eligible to submit your material.
How do I submit my material?
- The easiest and cheapest way to send your material is via email to: editor@whatifmagazine.com
- If you prefer to send material by mail please be sure to supply us with an email address where we can reach you or a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) with sufficient postage to send you a response. Please remember: We will be sending the response from Canada so you must use Canadian postage stamps or an International Reply Coupon (IRC). See what I mean about email being easier?
- Any material you submit whether by email or snail mail must have your name, age, complete mailing address (even if you are submitting by email) and email address somewhere on the piece. Any material without this information will not be considered.
