Fiction – 1st Place – Close Your Eyes and Drift Away

I wake with a start and feel a presence somewhere in the room.
“Is someone there?” I ask, my voice thick with sleep.
As usual, no one answers. I know I won’t fall back to sleep so I sit up and pool the blankets around my waist, looking around at my personalized white walls, the otherwise boring white plains are littered with posters of my favourite bands, flyers from school events, and a couple posters from mangas I enjoyed reading. On my left is a set of glass double doors, the translucent-white, long, flowing curtains stir slightly in the breeze, beckoning me.
I slip out of bed and cross the room to close the doors, as I do every night when I’m awakened by the feeling of being watched. But this time I continue, stepping through the doors. Fiction -1st Place – The Dove Project

The hum of the crowd fell silent with the amplified words, “Honoured guests …” The cold and exhausted world leaders, cocked their heads left to right to catch a glimpse of the owner of the husky voice addressing them. “Please take your seats, we are ready to begin.” The shuffling of chairs was quick since everyone had been anxiously awaiting this very moment.
“After the billions of dollars and man hours that so many countries and their top scientists have poured into The Dove Project, it is with great pride that I am able to say we are about to make history and offer an olive branch to our earth’s future. The prototype is ready, so if you would kindly put on the protective eyewear provided in your packages then look to the right wall of the hanger you will be the first of mankind, outside our lab, to witness the beautiful Aphrodite.” Read the rest of this entry »
